Saltwater Intrusion Impacts Microbial Diversity and Function in Groundwater Ecosystems

چکیده

Background: Groundwater ecosystem services provided by microbial communities are essential for the maintenance of water quality. For example, nitrate contamination is a recognised health and issue in most groundwater systems, often alleviated through processes. The effects climate change, including increasing salinity from rising sea levels, or over-abstraction, on these largely unknown. Methods: This study uses combination culture-dependent (growth curves, isolation bacteria) culture-independent (16S rRNA gene sequencing) methods to identify potential saltwater intrusion microbes their functions. Results: Some negatively impacted chloride concentrations, declines bacteria responsible ammonia removal. These ecosystems should be prioritised future protection level rise increased extraction agriculture other uses. Other stimulated presence chloride, caused an increase abundance salt-tolerant heterotrophic using sugars, peptides, organic acids energy. Conclusion: There have been no previous studies investigating impact Aotearoa New Zealand groundwaters. identification keystone species that affected salinity, which disproportionately large effect low functional redundancy, essential. Water management decisions about abstraction limits defences against can underpinned robust scientific knowledge community sensitivity salinity.

Experimental and numerical investigation of saltwater intrusion dynamics in flux-controlled groundwater systems

[1] Sea level rise and reduction of groundwater fluxes due to changes in rainfall patterns are the two major climate change–induced hydrological variables that can severely affect saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. In this study we use a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to study the impacts of changes in one of these climate change–induced hydrological varia...

Microbial diversity drives multifunctionality in terrestrial ecosystems

Despite the importance of microbial communities for ecosystem services and human welfare, the relationship between microbial diversity and multiple ecosystem functions and services (that is, multifunctionality) at the global scale has yet to be evaluated. Here we use two independent, large-scale databases with contrasting geographic coverage (from 78 global drylands and from 179 locations acros...

Diversity of Plants and Animals in Mountain Ecosystems in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a hotspot of plant and animal species diversity and endemism andis important for the conservation of biodiversity on a global scale. The country is located ata biological crossroads. Species from Central and Northern Europe, Central Asia, theMiddle East, and North Africa mingle here with endemics found nowhere else. Therichness of Tajikistan‘s biodiversity shows up at the genetic,...

Diversity, stability, and reproducibility in stochastically assembled microbial ecosystems

Microbial ecosystems are remarkably diverse, stable, and often consist of a balanced mixture of core and peripheral species. Here we propose a conceptual model exhibiting all these emergent properties in quantitative agreement with real ecosystem data, specifically species abundance and prevalence distributions. Resource competition and metabolic commensalism drive stochastic ecosystem assembly...

Systematic Conservation Planning for Groundwater Ecosystems Using Phylogenetic Diversity

Aquifer ecosystems provide a range of important services including clean drinking water. These ecosystems, which are largely inaccessible to humans, comprise a distinct invertebrate fauna (stygofauna), which is characterized by narrow distributions, high levels of endemism and cryptic species. Although being under enormous anthropogenic pressure, aquifers have rarely been included in conservati...
